Customized solutions for vehicle heating and air conditioning are the bread and butter of Eberspaecher, which recently unveiled a new water heater specifically designed for electric buses.

When it comes to e-buses, we are well aware, the heating aspect plays a major role, as does energy consumption, which must be manageable so that the bus does not lose too much autonomy. And so Eberspaecher has developed a solution to combine autonomy and comfort.

The heart of the system is a resistance heater with an output of ten kilowatts; depending on the use of the bus and the resulting heating requirements, up to three heaters per vehicle can be combined, resulting in a heating output of 30 kW.
The resistance heater operates in a voltage range of 500 to 820 Volt and can be continuously regulated via a percentage signal, allowing, the company says, “rapid passenger compartment heating and gentle battery conditioning without energy loss.”

For use at extremely low temperatures, the electric water heater can also be combined with a fuel-fired heater-depending on the model, according to Eberspächer, with no further adaptations. Especially in Northern Europe, the use of diesel or HVO heaters in electric buses is still common to preserve the range of the electric battery.
