A new chassis specially made for three-axle electric buses-that’s the news from Scania. The Griffin, in fact, has announced the expansion of its range of e-bus offerings, unveiling the version of the ad hoc chassis also for battery-powered vehicles intended for mission profiles that are not purely urban, as three-axle buses usually are.

The three-axle electric bus chassis by Scania

It is a variant, named 6×2*4, of the 4×2 LE Bev platform for battery electric buses, introduced in 2023. The new space-saving version is designed to meet the needs of medium- and heavy-duty operations and, with greater passenger capacity than the current one, is suitable for shorter urban, suburban, and intercity routes. The new electric chassis is built to provide maximum performance in tough conditions throughout its lifetime, and its flexibility allows it to be further adapted to the needs of outfitters and customers.

Equipped with a new rear axle, electric motor and charging interface, all also available for the current two-axle chassis, the three-axle variant offers a competitive, efficient and reliable solution.

Customers who will use the new 6×2*4 LE BEV variant in their daily electric transport activities can reap numerous benefits. The robust chassis design helps to increase the vehicle’s durability and thus extend its service life, while the flexible adaptation to specific applications greatly improves overall efficiency. The bus’s improved sub-chassis minimizes noise levels and improves drivability, making travel more comfortable for passengers and the driver. Finally, the positioning of vehicle components simplifies maintenance, reducing costs and increasing the operational availability of the bus.

The axle gears are designed for the best possible energy efficiency and long service life. Two new axle gears have faster gear ratios and reduce internal losses, improving efficiency. In addition, the new steering axle is located behind the axle shaft and is designed to fit the new rear axle. Last axle steering helps to better distribute weight and reduces tire wear.

«With a completely new electric machine, this three-axle electric variant is reliable, energy efficient and powerful, thus providing excellent uptime, range, acceleration and starting, not least on steep gradients. In addition, with its new high-speed rear-mounted charging option and a choice of power nodes, it offers flexibility that results in buses that are adapted to local needs», said Carl-Johan Lööf, product management manager for Scania’s passenger transport solutions. Who added: «As the push toward electrification increases, buses built on this platform will be competitive worldwide and can be used to expand electric operations to new types of applications».
