The Greek Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport has announced a tender for 125 new electric buses to be added to Athens‘ urban transportation network. This project is part of a larger initiative to renew the city’s bus fleet, with a focus on electric vehicles.
Also in Greece, 250 Yutong e-buses were awarded in 2023, with first 46 vehicles delivered in Athens and Thessaloniki in spring 2024.
Tender for electric buses in Greece
The program is funded by the European Recovery and Resilience Facility, which has allocated €88.35 million for its completion by 2026. This is part of the broader “Public Transport – Electrification” program, which involves both the Ministries of Infrastructure and Transport, and National Economy and Finance, as reported on local media Greek City Times.
The new electric buses are in addition to a planned procurement of 950 buses in 2025.
Minister Christos Staikouras is quoted as saying “The announcement of this new tender demonstrates the government’s commitment to improving public transportation. This project not only advances the full modernization of the fleet but also offers enhanced services to passengers, boosts accessibility, and reduces the environmental footprint”.
