Citybus, Hong Kong‘s public transport operator, has set an ambitious goal: to replace 70 percent of its buses with hydrogen-powered models. The first step in this hydrogen policy, as reported by China Hydrogen Bulletin, is that the company is road-testing a prototype hydrogen bus.

Citybus’s hydrogen-powered bus is the 12-meter double-decker (DD12) with three axles, the only one of its kind among vehicles on the market to date. It’s a bus that Citybus developed together with China’s Wisdom Motor, while the fuel cell technology is signed by Ballard-Weichai, capable of developing a maximum power output of 80 kW.

The claimed range of the DD12 is 400 kilometers, while the maximum capacity is 91 passengers. Instead, 10 minutes are required for refueling, carried out at Hong Kong‘s first hydrogen refueling station at the Citybus depot in West Kowloon.
