61,000 new energy buses were sold by Chinese bus makers during 2020. The bus production in China accounted for around 150,000 units. Both the total bus market and the new energy bus market in China went down 20% compared with 2019.

It’s the second year in a row showing a decrease in production volumes for Chinese manufacturers: in 2019 it was registered a -11%. Market leader? Still Yutong (although its share has decreased).

The figures are reported on Chinabuses.org. On the website, a chart concerning the ten bus makers in China in 2020 is displayed.

Yutong, again market leader on the Chinese bus market

In 2019 Yutong had sold 58,688 buses worldwide and registered a market share of 37.1 % on the domestic market, that saw a decrease of 11 % in 2019. According to statistics of China bus statistics information network, in 2019 a total of 134,331 buses with a length of over 7 meters were sold in China, down 11.31% from 2018. Affected by this, the sales volume of Yutong Bus also decreased slightly. The domestic market share of Yutong has been 37.1% in 2019, increased by 2.6 percentage points compared to 2018. 2020 has brought to a new decrease in production volumes, with 41,558 buses delivered (still according Chinabuses.org). The new energy vehicles are 15,940.

BYD, in the second position, saw a significant increase in its market share in the new energy bus market, although the 15% reached in 2020 is still far from the 26% held by Yutong. Third, CRRC Electric, with 5,500 e-buses delivered. Zhongtong follow with nearly 5,000 new energy buses.

Chinese bus market down 20% in 2020

The decrease in volumes of new energy buses sold by Chinese manufacturers may be a first consequence of the new subsidy policy launched by Chinese government during 2019. This went along with the general decrease of the bus market related to the pandemic outspread, that caused low figures almost everywhere. In Western Europe, looking at the first semester 2020, about 1,300 city buses, 500 intercity and 3,500 coaches were missing compared to the same period of 2019. Anyhow, it must be said that the European electric bus market 2020 is on track to establish a new record of registrations.
