Energy giant Copec invests in Optibus to accelerate bus electrification and smart charging in Latin America.
A strategic partnership between Copec WIND Ventures, Copec’s strategic venture capital arm, with Optibus has been made official: together they will explore synergies related to bus depot electrification, eBus-as-a-service, and smart charging for passenger service providers in Latin America. The investment reinforces Optibus’ status as a player in electric vehicle solutions and increases the company’s valuation after the 2022 funding round.
LATAM in the sights of Copec and Optibus
The electric bus market in Latin America represents one of the greatest opportunities for sustainability and impact worldwide. In thirty-two Latin American cities, the number of electric buses is expected to increase sevenfold by the end of this decade, from 4,000 e-buses currently deployed to 25,000. This represents an investment opportunity of $11.6 billion by 2030 and $24.6 billion by 2050, as well as an impactful opportunity to create cleaner mobility in a region where public and shared transportation comprises 68 percent of passenger trips, one of the highest rates globally.
