The Indian electric bus market recorded 307 registrations in February 2025, bringing the total for the first two months of the year to 667 units. This represents a continuation of the segment’s gradual expansion, though electric buses still account for a fraction of the overall bus market.

While electric bus adoption is growing, it remains a niche segment in the broader Indian bus industry. In 2024, India registered 3,616 electric buses, while diesel bus registrations exceeded 41,000. The total bus market, including all fuel types, reached nearly 48,000 units. Electric buses made up 12.5% of the heavy passenger vehicle (HPV) segment, which includes buses over 5 tons GVW, and 6.2% of the overall market in 2024. Tata Motors led the HPV electric bus market last year with 1,431 registrations, accounting for 40% of the market, followed by Olectra Greentech with 630 units and JBM Auto with 556 units, representing 17.7% and 15.6% market shares, respectively.

Despite increasing sales, electric buses remain a fraction of India’s total bus registrations. However, government incentives and procurement programs, such as the PM e-Bus Sewa Scheme-2 (that saw JBM achieving a 1,000-units order), are expected to accelerate adoption.
