The second session of the Sustainable Bus Tour 2024 is set to take place on October 2nd in Strasbourg, during the European Mobility Expo show (former Transport Publics). Entitled “On the way to a fully zero emission city bus market in 2035? Technology | business case | market uptake“, the conference will delve into the rapidly evolving landscape of zero emission buses in Europe, focusing on the pressing issues and future prospects of the city bus segment.

The session (at 9.30 in Studio 1 conference area) will host contributions from leading public transport operators Keolis and Transdev, industry players such as Iveco Bus and Irizar e-mobility for the vehicle manufacturing side and ZF for the components side. Also represented in the panel, the French national hydrogen association France Hydrogène and consultancy company RaboResearch (branch of RaboBank).

It follows the first conference session “Balance Shifts in Public Transport: Operators and Industry in the Energy Transition Era” held at Next Mobility Exhibition in Milan in May 2024.

Sustainable Bus Tour at European Mobility Expo

With a sharp focus on today’s projects and the challenges facing the public transport sector, the Sustainable Bus Tour aims to delve into key issues and future outlooks, facilitating discussions among operators, manufacturers, organizations, institutions, and providers of components and technologies.

As Europe moves towards a – close: 2035 – future where only zero emission buses will be sold for urban operations, battery-electric technology currently leads the market. However, the tide is shifting with an increasing number of fuel cell bus projects and a growing variety of H2-powered models. This session will explore the dynamics of this fast-paced market and the innovations driving it forward.

Fundings for public transport are robust, and the market is bouncing back in terms of registrations. However, significant questions remain about the future trajectory. The localization of the supply chain is one topic of interest in the post pandemic world. Additionally, OEMs are working to adjust their production capacities to scale up and meet the growing demand for zero emission buses. Creative financing models are being explored to support this growth, and the challenge of managing the second life of batteries is becoming increasingly pertinent.

A crucial question for public transport operators (PTOs), public transport authorities (PTAs), and institutions is how the race for innovation and modernization in bus operations will translate into an increased modal share of public transportation. The conference promises to provide insightful discussions and strategic insights, making it a must-attend event for anyone invested in the future of sustainable urban mobility. Join industry leaders, experts, and stakeholders in Strasbourg to explore these pivotal topics and chart the course for the future of zero emission buses in Europe.
