Volvo Buses announces it has received an order from Svealandstrafiken for a total of 106 electric buses to operate in the counties of Västmanland and Örebro in Sweden.
We had already anticipated this order, based on reporting from trade media Bussmagasinet.se, as the operator switched electric bus orders to the Swedish OEM while cancelling the majority of Ebusco commissioned vehicles due to late delivery.
Svealandstrafiken orders Volvo intercity electric buses
The initial order included 60 Volvo 8900 Electric – the first orders since the model was launched, in March 2024 – and 13 Volvo 7900 Electric Articulated. Svealandstrafiken has now placed a call-off for a further 33 Volvo 7900 Electric Articulated. Svealandstrafiken already has 17 Volvo electric buses in operation on urban traffic routes in Västerås.
The Volvo 8900 Electric will operate in regional traffic in the counties of Västmanland and Örebro, with the buses expected to begin service in early 2027. The Volvo 7900 Electric Articulated city buses, due for delivery in 2026, will serve city traffic routes in Örebro.
During the presentation of the 8900 Electric, based on the Volvo BZR Electric chassis, the group stated that the first versions will be available in “selected European markets during 2025”. Sizes? 12,296 and 14,896 mm.
The chassis for the Volvo 7900 Electric Articulated and Volvo 8900 Electric will be manufactured at Volvo Buses’ facilities in Borås and Uddevalla in Sweden, while the bodies will be made at MCV, following the partnership signed in 2023. A brand-new production facility is being built in Egypt, specially for the manufacture of complete electric buses from Volvo Buses.
“We are particularly pleased to have received a major order for our new intercity bus, the Volvo 8900 Electric. It will enable us to offer efficient, sustainable and quiet transportation not only in cities but also between cities. For Svealandstrafiken, this is more than just an order for electric buses though. They have a holistic perspective where social sustainability and service network have also been important factors in their choice of partner for the electrification of city and regional traffic,” says Martin Spjern, Market Manager Sweden, Volvo Buses.
“We are looking forward to continuing our collaboration with Volvo Buses, a company that shares our commitment to quality and innovation in public transport,” says Geert Schaap, Head of Technology & Innovation, Svealandstrafiken.
“The order for 106 electric buses from Svealandstrafiken shows that we have chosen the right path in the strategic change we have implemented in Europe. Together with our partners, we will continue to develop solutions for public transport, and through our collaborations with external bodybuilders, we can also adapt our offer, depending on the customer and market,” says Thomas Nylund, VP, Cluster Europe, Volvo Buses.
