In 2024<\/strong>, India registered 3,616 electric buses<\/strong>, while diesel bus registrations exceeded 41,000, based on figures from government database Vahan portal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The Central Motor Vehicles Rules (CMVR) categorize passenger vehicles into M1 (Light), M2 (Medium), and M3 (Heavy) based on gross vehicle weight and seating capacity. In 2024<\/strong>, the Indian bus market saw a total registration of 58,936 buses<\/strong>, encompassing HPV (Heavy Passenger Vehicles, over 5 ton GVW)) and MPV (Medium Passenger Vehicles, between 3.5 and 5 ton). Such figures includes also ‘Educational Institution Buses’, with this latter category making over 10,000 units. Bus registrations are therefore nearly 48k<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Looking at the whole bus market (all kind of tractions), the landscape was dominated by Ashok Leyland <\/strong>with 18,215 registrations, capturing a 37.8% market share<\/strong>. Tata Motors<\/strong> followed closely with 15,077 registrations and a 31.3% share. VE Commercial Vehicles<\/strong> secured the third position, registering 8,397 buses and holding a 17.4% market share. SML Isuzu and Daimler India<\/strong> followed with 3.3% and 2.9% market shares, registering 1,602 and 1,377 buses, respectively.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Let’s now focus on the electric bus segment. In the HPV category, 3,568 pure electric buses were registered<\/strong>, while the MPV segment recorded 44 electric bus registrations. <\/p>\n\n\n\n In the heavy sector, the share of e-buses in 2024 was 12.5%<\/strong>, while considering the entire bus market (also including 3.5 – 5 ton vehicles) it stands at 6.2 percent.<\/p>\n\n\n\nNearly 60,000 buses registered in India in 2024<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
