Alongside the decommissioning of the vehicles, the company has also decided to dismantle the hydrogen refuelling station at Vaartkaai. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The news has been reported on local media and on trade outlets such as <a href=\"https:\/\/cleantechnica.com\/2025\/03\/07\/hydrogen-buses-keep-failing-de-lijn-is-just-the-latest-to-cut-losses\/\">CleanTechnica<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.h2-view.com\/story\/belgian-transport-operator-retires-hydrogen-buses-focuses-on-electrification\/2122666.article\/\">H2-View<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.electrive.com\/2025\/03\/11\/poznan-antwerp-run-into-trouble-with-hydrogen-buses\/\">electrive<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">De Lijn shuts off fuel cell bus operations<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A key factor in this decision is mentioned as being the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sustainable-bus.com\/news\/van-hool-vdl-crisis-future\">bankruptcy of Van Hool<\/a>, provider of the small fleet, that was delivered in 2014. With the company\u2019s closure, technical support and maintenance options were no longer available, contributing to higher operational costs over the vehicles\u2019 lifetime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Flemish Minister of Mobility, <strong>Annick De Ridder<\/strong>, confirmed that De Lijn\u2019s future strategy will focus exclusively on battery-electric buses. \u201cWith the bankruptcy, technical support and maintenance options disappeared. Combined with <strong>higher operational costs<\/strong>, the decision was made to dismantle the hydrogen refuelling station at Vaartkaai and retire the five hydrogen buses,\u201d De Ridder stated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She further emphasized that hydrogen is not currently considered a viable solution for public transport in Belgium. \u201c<strong>Our electrification strategy is focused on battery-powered vehicles<\/strong>.
